Many times we paint pictures in our mind when we are reading something or when listening to something. So I thought I might help you get a more accurate picture in your head of some of the amazing things we get to see and experience.
Up in the Seattle area most folks do not know that we have over 700 islands. To accommodate for that we have the world’s 2nd largest ferry system in the world. Our ferries have been running since the 1930s. It is quite a sight to behold, but an even better way to avoid traffic.
This 1st picture shows you a ferry passing my ferry. What you are unable to see is the 250 cars and trucks and RVs it has on the inside over 2 decks, then 2 more decks for passengers. They often have a dining area with cafeteria style eateries and tables, as well as vending machines. There are tons of seats all around the windows, with tables and places where you can stretch out and take a nap, or sit and enjoy the view.
Many of them have seats inside and outside deck areas for viewing all the wildlife or just walking laps and taking in the fresh air. This is often where you find me enjoying the serenity of it and the amazing views like the 2nd picture. We have often seen whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and all kinds of ships from huge shipping freighters to naval aircraft carriers or submarines.
The shortest run is a 15 minute ride and the longest one is 3 hours that goes through the Orcas islands and has multiple stops along the way. Sometimes I would take the kids and we would just island hop. We would park our car, walk on the ferry, get on and off at different islands and enjoy the day. You certainly can’t beat it if you want to avoid driving around and sitting in traffic, it is by far the best commute to get across the pond as we call it, the Puget Sound.
Well there’s the whistle and it’s my stop, so until the next adventure….
