One of the great things about traveling around so much is getting to meet new people. People are absolutely fascinating to me. Yes they drain me when I have too much time with other folks, just like you, but I do genuinely get energized being around a group of new people and hearing their stories and learning from them.
Last year when I spoke at a meetup, I had the pleasure of meeting Ellie Baxter. So when she decided to launch their meetup, she reached out to me to come speak at it. Because my schedule is so busy, we had to book it in advance. But we had no idea what life was going to throw at me in between the booking and the event.
You see I have a broken hip that is completely collapsed and waiting to be replaced. In the meantime, my other hip which was already replaced due to the same work accident, was having major issues and giving out constantly so that I kept falling. The doctor’s only solution was to go back on crutches and keep waiting for the insurance. So Ellie had know idea that when I walked in, or hobbled in, that I was already 3 months on crutches at that point and dealing with a level 8 and 9 pain each day.
Yet there I was. Yes I could have just canceled and tried to find a time to reschedule, but then who knows when that would have happened, and I needed something to encourage me and energize me. So even though it was hard and it took some time to recover from, it was worth it to me for the mental boost.
I got to meet Jessica and Brandy Sommers as well as a host of other great folks that are busy jumping into multifamily real estate and trying to get some things done. As a speaker I get just as much out of it as the guests do. I get to see those light bulb moments that go off when they finally understand something that I taught them, or they see how they can apply it to their business or life. I also get to be a brief stop on their journey of life, who wouldn’t love that?
I wonder what tomorrow’s journey will hold, hopefully less crutches and less pain!
